July started with a month’s quota of rain in the space of one week, with 58.1mm falling on Saturday 5th July, causing our Summer Carnival Procession to cancel. There was a belt of low pressure, unsettled weather, over us up to the 11th, with 150mm (6”) of rain over 10 days – twice the average for the entire month, most of it over 5 days. We then had a pleasant, and at times very hot and sunny, period of 15 days, with only slight showers, before another Atlantic weather pattern moved in on us for the last 4 days of the month, giving a further 56mm (2¼”) with torrential downpours on the 31st. Making the most asked question in the Information Centre “Where can I buy wellies?” Theoretically, during the summer, the jet stream moves north and we have highs and hot dry conditions. If the weather patterns stay like the winter ones, with the main Atlantic weather circulation of low pressure systems moving up and across from tropical Americas to NW Europe, then, as the air and seas are warmer in summer, clouds can pick up and hold much more moisture – so when it does rain we know all about it!
